Franklin “Gene” Sample, age 80, of Imlay City, MI, died Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at his home.

Franklin Gene Sample was born September 24, 1938 in Richmond, MI. He was the son of the late Elmer and the late Daisy Sample. Gene grew up in Richmond, MI and was a 1956 graduate of Richmond High School. He continued his education at Eastern Michigan University and received his bachelor’s degree.

He served in the United States Air Force Reserves during the time of the Bay of Pigs/Cuban Crisis.

After serving in the US Air Force, Gene went on to earn his master’s degree in business from Wayne State University. He married Lois Ann Marie Kethe on July 28, 1962 in Richmond, MI. Gene and Lois lived in Romeo before moving to Imlay City in 1985. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, on March 4, 2015. Gene was a professor at Macomb Community College - Center Campus in Warren, MI, teaching accounting for 30 years before retiring.

Gene’s passion was for numbers. He would help local churches balance their books and perform audits. He enjoyed playing music. Gene played the piano, organ, ukulele, banjo, and the saxophone. He enjoyed going to Tennessee Valley to listen to banjo music. Gene built seven-eight houses in his lifetime and did the plumbing and wiring. He loved chocolate and ice cream. His greatest love was his grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, Chuck (Heather) Sample of Imlay City, MI and Tim (Sheri) Sample of Alger, MI; one brother, Donald (Marie) Sample of Hartwell, GA; and his eight grandchildren, Laura (Paul) Skinner, Abby, Elijah, Katie, Justin, Ally, Sophia and Gracie.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Sample; parents, Elmer and Daisy Sample; and his brother, Dale (Mary) Sample.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m., Monday, November 5, 2018 at Imlay City Christian Reformed Church, 395 N. Cedar St., Imlay City, MI. Pastor Chuck Herpolsheimer, of the Light of Christ Community Church, will officiate. Interment will follow at Bethany Mennonite Cemetery in Attica.

The family will be available for visitation 5-8 p.m., Saturday, November 3, 1-5 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, November 4 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home of Imlay City, 225 N. Main Street, Imlay City, MI, and 10-11 a.m. Monday, November 5, at Christian Reformed Church of Imlay City.
