Emily Jane Young
Died: Saturday, April 21, 2018
Emily Jane Young passed away suddenly on April 21, 2018, after a long struggle with health issues, and is at last at peace with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Born April 8, 1946, in Brown City Michigan, to John Albert and Winnifred Jane (Owens) Young, she attended public school in Imlay City, Michigan, graduating from Imlay City High School in 1964. After high school, Emily attended Olivet College, receiving a B.A. degree with dual majors in History and Physical Education in 1968. While there, she was a member of Alpha Lamdba Epsilon Sorority.
After college graduation, she first taught Physical Education at Ithaca High School in Ithaca, Michigan. In 1970, she returned to Olivet, teaching Physical Education at Olivet College and serving as a coach for field hockey, basketball, and archery.
In 1973, Emily moved to Reno, Nevada, working for several private sector companies and the National Judicial College. Enrolling at the University of Nevada, Reno, she received a Master’s Degree in Physical Education in 1979. She was hired by Washoe County School District, teaching swimming in the elementary schools and coaching high school springboard diving, including training several state champions. She taught young elementary, At Risk, and English Second Language students throughout the district until 2002. At that time, health issues necessitated she retire as a full time teacher.
Emily was a lifelong teacher, a dedicated supporter of women’s athletics (lately women’s basketball at the University of Nevada), and a lover of music. She attended as many UNR games as her health would allow, and knew the players personally. She will be sorely missed by the team. She played trombone in high school and college, singing in choirs, and assisting with student show productions.
Emily was devoted in her belief in Jesus Christ, was a member of Grace Church in Reno for many years, and lately attended Sierra Bible Church. Emily was a dedicated coordinator for the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University, and shepherded many people through classes in developing sound financial principles.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her brother, John W. (Karilyn) Young of Battle Creek, MI; and nephews, John C. Young of Wilmington, NC, Nicholas D. (Amanda) Young of Marshall, MI; and Kendall J., Adam J., and Hannah R. Young, all of Battle Creek. She is also survived by many cousins and other relatives. Sadly, she was not aware of the addition of a great-nephew by adoption, Brayden (Nicholas and Amanda).
A memorial service will be held at Sierra Bible Church, 3195 Everett Drive, in Reno, NV, at 1:30 p.m. on May 20, 2018. All who loved
Emily are welcome to attend and bring their
stories of Emily to
share. In lieu of gifts
and flowers, donations may be made in the name of Emily Young to the University of Nevada Women’s Athletic Program Scholarship Fund.
At a future date, she will be returned and interned with her parents in Lewiston, Michigan.
