Robert “Bob” Hughes, age 93, of Imlay City, Michigan, died Friday, March 2, 2018 at Angelic Gardens Adult Foster Care of Lum, MI.

Robert Shaw Hughes was born March 12, 1924 in Detroit, MI. He was the son of the late Robert and the late Margaret Wren (Shaw) Hughes. He grew up in Detroit. Bob graduated from Wilbur Wright High School. After school he worked as a tradesman at a machine shop before joining the service.

He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943-1945.

Bob married Elizabeth Ann Guibord on April 29, 1977 in Farmington Hills, Michigan. They have lived in the Imlay City area for 40 years.

He was an independent contractor. Early on, Bob owned and operated the first plastic manufacturing company in Detroit, MI. He went on to start a company that made seats for Chrysler. Bob and his brother built homes, he plowed snow, built wooden boats in the 1950s, and he even built a resort up north in Michigan with six cabins for his family. In 1992, Bob and his sons opened Tartan Metal Fabricating, in Yale, MI. Even though he was officially retired, he never really retired, he went into the shop every Thursday to make sure things were running “right.” He was also an inventor. A couple of Bob’s inventions included metal level locks and the “Step Daddy Ladder.” Bob was always coming up with ways to make things work more efficiently.

Bob loved working with any type of wood. He made beautiful furniture, rocking horses, pictures frames, anything you mentioned, he could make.

He was a member of the Belle River Monday night golf league. Bob was one of only two people on the league to make a hole in one.

Bob loved to go golfing, boating, bow hunting, and enjoyed mowing the lawn. He was a beautiful artist and photographer.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Hughes; one daughter, Deborah (Mike) Lambourn of Metamora, MI; three sons, Robert L. Hughes of Indian River, MI, Timothy Hughes of Yale, MI and Dennis (Karen) Hughes of Ortonville, MI; one brother, James (Diane) Hughes of Oxford, MI; three grandchildren, Brian (Amanda) Lambourn of Columbiaville, MI, Craig (Kara) Lambourn of Lapeer, MI, and Katie Hughes of Ortonville, MI; four great-grandchildren, Myles, Morgan, Deagan, and Brandon; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Riney of West Bloomfield, MI and Rosemary (Gerald) Lynch of West Bloomfield, MI; and his brother-in-law, Michael (Carol) Guibord of OH.

Bob was preceded in death by first wife, Barbara Hughes; parents, Robert and Margaret Hughes; his sister, Jean Smith; and his brother, William Hughes.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home of Imlay City, 225 N. Main Street, Imlay City, MI. Interment be at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, MI.

The family will be available for visitation 10-11 a.m., Wednesday, March 7 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home of Imlay City.
