Carl Ezra Wegner

Died: Friday, June 30, 2017
Age: 80
Carl Ezra Wegner, 80, of Indian River (formerly of Almont and Manistique) Michigan, passed away June 30, 2017.

Born August 25, 1936, in Romeo, Michigan, Carl was the son of Carl E. and Doris (Edgerton) Wegner Sr. He grew up in Allenton, MI. As a youngster Carl attended Allenton School and later attended Almont High School, where he graduated in 1954.

For most of his life Carl was a skilled carpenter who worked in various capacities of the building trades. He was also a real estate agent for State Wide Real Estate in Manistique.

Always community minded, Carl was a volunteer firefighter for Almont Township Fire Department and the Manistique Fire Department. He had a passion for helping others and enjoyed his time with both departments.

Throughout his entire life Carl was an accomplished musician. He started out in Almont School’s Band, he also played accordion with various dance bands, and on occasion joined in with Almont’s Royal Rubes/Coon Skinner’s Band. Carl could play a number of instruments that he could just naturally pick up and begin to play.

Musically, Carl wasn't limited to instruments. He was a longtime member of Manistique’s, Up Beats, barbershop quartet. Carl was a member of the Green Bay Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.

It isn’t surprising that Carl lived a music-filled life; he grew up in a musical family where his father and brothers gathered together and played all the old songs that were so dear to their hearts.

Carl loved the outdoors; he was an ardent hunter and fisherman who looked forward with fervor to the changing seasons.

Likewise, Carl was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons. He first joined Almont’s Masonic Lodge, moving on to Manistique’s, lastly joining the Karnak Lodge in Indian River, and making Life Membership in Dec. 2010, with over 40 years of membership plus 3rd Degree Mason-Blue Lodge.

He is survived by wife Joan (Mosack). Left to cherish his memory are his children: Debra (Gary) Wegner-VanDenBerg, Kimberly Wegner, and Karen (Ron) Ruzycki. Grandchildren: Heather Moore, Crystal (Ed) Guerrero, Nicholas (Jessica) VanDenBerg

and Tifani (Dr. Sara) VanDenBerg. Great-grandchildren: Madison, Dominik, Aden, Lucian, Ashton and Abigail;

Carl’s siblings, Roy (Phyllis) Wegner, Carol (Delbert) Shinn, Glenn (Evelyn) Wegner, Loren Wegner, Eileen (Don) Moore. Stepchildren: Tracey (Karen) Kriesch, Troy (Denise) Kriesch, Trisha (Randy) DeMars, Tab (Sherry) Kriesch. Several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law, MaryAnn Wegner, two nephews and one niece.

A memorial service was held on July 7, 2017 at the Indian River United Methodist Church.
