Henry Ettema, Age 85, of Imlay City, recently of Lapeer, Michigan passed away Friday, June 25, 2010 after an extended illness at Devonshire Assisted Living in Lapeer.

He was born June 16, 1925 in Imlay City, a son of Henie and Wemelina Ettema. He lived all of his life in the Imlay City area. He was married to Doris Engle on January 25, 1947 in Imlay City. Doris died on October 22, 2008. He had been a co-owner of Ettema Brothers Farms; they grew primarily celery, onions & potatoes. The brothers Hank, Bill and Bernie purchased their father’s farm in Goodland Township and operated it until 1992. They were well known and highly respected for their methods and produce all across Michigan and beyond.

Henry was a member of Imlay City Christian Reformed Church, an Imlay City Christian School Board member, and a member of several Michigan Farmer & Growers Associations.

Surviving are daughters, Patricia (Glenn) Wilcox of Wetumpka, Alabama, Carol (Gerald) Quimby of Imlay City, Sandy (Mark) Ettema - Johnson of Lapeer, and Kathleen (Garrett) Billmire of Earleville, Maryland; ten grandchildren, Michael (Grace) Dean, Brian Dean, April (Aaron) Burrell, Jason (Myndi Carie) Quimby, Christopher Quimby, Mark Johnson, Paul Johnson, Allison Billmire, Garrett Billmire, and Jeff (Laura) Wilcox; nine great -grandchildren, Kendal Dean, Christian Dean, Cody Dean, Cierra Dean, Connor Dean, Phillip Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Joshua Wilcox, and Nicole Wilcox; a brother, Gerritt (Sue) Ettema of Livingston TX; sisters, Trace Elling of Attica and Minnie VanSoest of Grand Rapids MI; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marguerite Ettema of Grand Rapids, Ruth Stamman of Capac and Harry Engle of Florida.

Hank is preceded in death by wife, Doris Ettema; brothers, Willem (Bill) Ettema, Bernard Ettema, and John Ettema; sisters, Effie Laarman, Wihelmina Ettema, Hattie Prince, and Christine VanderArk.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at the Imlay City Christian Reformed Church. The Reverend Gary Klumpenhower will officiate. Burial will follow in the Imlay Township Cemetery.
