Gladys Marion Schmaltz, 90, of Davison and formerly a Capac resident, died Wednesday morning, May 19, 2010, at home.

She was born Tuesday, December 23, 1919, in Imlay City the daughter of the late Ray and Ethel (LeBlond) Caldwell.

Her marriage of nearly 55 years to Harold P. Schmaltz took place November 25, 1943, in Capac. Harold passed away August 20, 1998.

Gladys earned her teaching degree from the former Michigan State Normal College and taught at the former Matoon and Donovan country schools until her marriage. Gladys and Harold were the former sextons of the Mussey Twp. Cemeteries for 18 years and had been lifelong area farmers.

She was a member of St. Johnís Lutheran Church, Capac, and Womanís Group, Michigan Farm Bureau and St. Clair County Extension Club. Gladys had taught Sunday school, was known as a great cook and was involved with 4-H.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Nadine (Thomas) Gillette of Royal Oak, Elaine (Richard) Colombo of Shelby Township and Maureen (Steve) Stislicki of Highland; two grandsons, Justin Colombo and Kenneth Stislicki; sister and brother-in-law, Eila (Chuck) Kelley of Florida; several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and special caregivers from An Angelís Touch, Tara, Ebony, Ida and Darryl.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 21 at St. Johnís Lutheran Church, Capac, with 10:00 a.m. visiting. Rev. Joan Christoffers, pastor, officiated. Burial followed at Capac Cemetery, Mussey Township.

Memorials are suggested to St. Johnís Lutheran Church Elevator Fund.
