Harold Gass, 87, of Imlay City, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at home after an extended illness.

Harold Donald Gass was born May 11, 1922 in Dryden, the son of Robert and Bessie Gass. He graduated from Imlay City High School, class of 1940.

He married Phyllis Audrey Thompson on December 6, 1944 in Imlay City. They celebrated 65 years of marriage in 2009.

He was the owner and insurance agent for the Gass Insurance Company for over 30 years in Capac.

He was a life member of the West Goodland United Methodist Church. Harold was a chairman on the church board for many years. He was a member of the Capac Lions and the Free and Accepted Masons; he was raised to a Master Mason at the Imlay City Lodge in 1945. Harold became the Worshipful Master of the Imlay City Masonic Lodge in 1964. He joined Scottish Rite in 1968 and was a life member of the Shiners and a Grand Lodge Representative 4 times. Harold was a charter member of Imlay Township Planning Community and ZBA. He spent 9 years on the County Planning Committee and was a member of M-53 corridor planning.

Harold drove the Imlay City school bus for 9 1/2 years. He sponsored the Silver Dollar Essay Contest for the FFA, and agriculture classes in Capac and at Vo-Tech. Harold joined the Tin Lizzie group and operated cars in parades throughout the area. He raised over $300,000.00 for the Shriners Hospitals and helped 35 local children go to the Shrine Hospital for medical needs. Harold and Phyllis were both lifetime members of the Eastern Star.

Harold is survived by his wife, Phyllis Gass of Imlay City; son, Earl (Waynette) Gass of Imlay City; daughter, Charlotte (Gary) Miller of Romeo; grandchildren: Sarah Miller, Heather (Marques) Wood, and Jason Gass; great-grandchildren, Erinn Wood and Morgan Wood; and sister-in-law, Maryanne Gass of Imlay City.

He was preceded by his son, Robert W. Gass; parents, Robert and Bessie Gass; and brother, Maurice Gass.

A funeral service was held 1 p.m. Monday, May 3, 2010 at the West Goodland United Methodist Church in Imlay City. Pastor Pam Barnett officiated. Burial followed at the Imlay Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Children Hospitals.
