Donald H. Terpening, 85, of 177 Dana Lane, Marquette, died Sunday evening, January 17, 2010, at Marquette General Hospital.
Mr. Terpening was born on June 7, 1924 in Goodland Township to the late Oliver and Mattie (Washer) Terpening and graduated from Almont High School.
Upon his graduation, Don enlisted with the U.S. Army proudly serving his country during World War II with the 511th Airborne Paratroopers. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Don was employed as a power plant engineer for 31 years with the State of Michigan, retiring in 1980 from Marquette Branch Prison.
In his free time, Don enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, most of all watching his grandchildren and nieces and nephews in their activities.
He was a member of the Church of Christ in Marquette as well as American Legion Post #44.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Shirley Terpening; one son, Rob (Grace) Terpening, both of Marquette; daughter-in-law, Floy Terpening of Grayling; a sister, Lila Frisch of Port Angeles, WA and brother, Oliver Terpening of Michigan; sister-in-law, Joan Zuhlke of Imlay City and brother-in-law, Larry (Dorothy) Shuart of Gladwin; also surviving are several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was an infant daughter at birth, Donna Lee Terpening; a son, Rick Terpening and three sisters.
Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home in Marquette on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Jim Larson and Al Meakes officiating. Spring interment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette.
