Albert Richard Dorow of Haslett, 80, passed away Monday, December 7, 2009.

Born November 15, 1929, Albert graduated from Imlay City High School. He was a scholarship athlete at Michigan State University where he ran track, was an All-American quarterback, and helped lead the 1951 Spartans to a national championship.

Upon graduating from MSU with All-American honors, he was drafted into the NFL where he enjoyed a 9 year career in professional football, namely with the Redskins and the New York Titans.

In 1962 he retired from playing and coached at Hillsdale College and then was an assistant coach, under good friend Duffy Daugherty, until 1971, when he took a head coaching job with the Hamilton Tiger Cats. He retired the following year and worked for Champion Motor Homes until he relocated to Sierra Vista, Arizona in 1990, where he spent much time hunting, fishing, and playing golf with his lifetime friend Jim Woodard and crew.

After 18 years he moved home to Michigan to be near family and his MSU Spartans.

Al was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Evelyn; parents Albert and Emma Dorow; brother Clifford (Jean) Dorow; sister Vera (Joseph) Maison; and great-nephew Michael Maison. Surviving are daughters Bernadine (Ed Brown) Houtz, Debbie (Ken) Latos, Jill (Steve) Walker; grandchildren Jennifer Houtz, Heather (Justin) Chamberlain, Steven and Nicole Latos, Steven and Stephani Walker; great-grandchildren Kyla, Alex, and Scarlett; and many special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Gordon Srkalovich and staff, Dr. Bradley Ropp, and the Okemos Health and Wellness Center, where he was treated like family.

A memorial service honoring Albert will be held Friday, December 11, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Peoples Church, 200 W. Grand River Ave., East Lansing with the Rev. Dr. Harry H. Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will take place at a later date in Imlay City.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the George Webster Scholarship Foundation, Spartan Fund, Webster Scholarship, 200 Spartan Way, East Lansing, MI 48824 in memory of Albert.
