Robert Charles Sheldon

Robert Charles Sheldon

Died: Sunday, June 28, 2009
Age: 71
Loving husband, father and grandfather, and a man of deep Christian faith, Bob will be remembered by all who knew him as a gentleman, full of love, patience, gentleness, kind honesty and strength. He always put his family first but never hesitated to help others in need.

At age 71, after a 14-year, positive, strong, and determined battle, he joined the Lord through complications of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia on June 28, 2009. Born on February 2, 1938 in Almont, Michigan, he learned the value of hard work and patience by working with his parents on a small dairy farm and carried an impeccable work ethic throughout his life. As a member of the Future Farmers of America, he was awarded the distinguished recognition of Outstanding State Farmer Gold Award Winner, was letterman and captain of his football and basketball teams, was President of the Almont High School class of 1956, and graduated with many other recognitions and scholarships. As one of the first generation of his family to attend college, he graduated from Michigan State University in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dairy Manufacturing, and was always a loyal Spartan.

After college, he worked as a milkman before beginning his career at Wyeth Laboratories in Mason. Beginning as a chemist in 1962, he worked his way through the ranks eventually becoming Production Manager until the plant closed. Later, he persistently and steadily worked with Century 21 - Shellhorn as best as his leukemia would allow. Active in his community during his children’s youth, he was a city council member and worked hard to create safe and imaginative places for both his own and his neighborhood’s children to play. He loved the outdoors and spent much of his final years between Drummond Island, Michigan where he had frequented since he was a young child, and traveling, appreciating the vast expanses of Alaska with his young bride, Margaret.

He is preceded in death by his father, Edwin Oliver Sheldon. He is survived by his young bride Margaret Anne (Trowbridge) of 51-plus years; his children, Robert Charles Sheldon, Jr., David Kevin Sheldon, and Anne Elizabeth Sheldon (Richard) Wentworth; grandchildren, Seth Monroe Sheldon, Lindsey Rene Sheldon, and Mathew David Sheldon; his mother, Bernice Marie Sheldon; brother Edwin Oliver (Ruth) Sheldon, Jr.; sister Violet Jean Willis; and many other nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sheldon residence of 3334 West Howell Road, Mason, MI. Those desiring, may make contributions to the Sparrow Regional Cancer Center, PO Box 30480, Lansing, MI 48909 in memory of Robert Sheldon. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, Lansing.
