Franklin John Mortimer

Age: 84
Franklin John Mortimer, age 84, of Jonathan’s Landing, (Jupiter, FL) passed away Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the Hospice Unit of Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.

Born in Port Huron, MI, he was a graduate of Port Huron High School and the Kemper Military Academy. He had been a resident of Jupiter for 19 years, coming from Port Huron, where he was a member of the First Congregational Church.

Mr. Mortimer was the former President/CEO of Mortimer & Son Lumber Company in Port Huron. He started in business in 1946 and built the business from one store to four locations. He retired from the business in the fall of 1994. He was known for his tough negotiating pricing skills of commodity lumber and plywood.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was a former member of the Port Huron Golf Club and an avid boater.

Mr. Mortimer took up the game of golf when he retired and shot a hole-in-one in February of 2005.

He was recently preceded in death by his wife, Doris J. Mortimer on July 2, 2009. Survivors include one son, Franklin J. “Chip” (Sheila) Mortimer II of Port Huron; two daughters, Rebecca J. (Hank) Orzechowski of Port Huron and Melissa J. (Clark) Powers of Reidsville, NC; eight grandchildren, Angela Middleton, Christopher O’Connor, Gerald Mortimer, Korey Mortimer, Trevor Michels, Derek Powers, William Powers and Timothy Powers; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marilyn Telfer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Arvilla Mortimer.

A Funeral Service was held Wednesday, July 22, at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, Jupiter, FL. Entombment followed at Riverside Memorial Park with the U.S. Army conducting Military Graveside Honors.

The family suggests contributions to the Palm Beach Gardens Hospice and Palliative Care Unit, 3360 Burns Road, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410 in his memory or to the donor’s choice. A Memorial Service for Mr. Mortimer and his wife, Doris J. Mortimer, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 8, 2009 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church with Father Brian Cokonougher, Celebrant.
