Erma Whiteman

Erma Whiteman, formerly of Imlay City passed away in her sleep on Monday, July 6, 2009. She died in her apartment at Independence Village in Brighton at the age of 95. She was born October 23, 1913 in Attica Township to Forrest and Cora (Pierce) Laidler.

Erma married Mervin Whiteman on November 19, 1932, who passed away January 16, 1984.

She was for many years a member of the First Congregational Church of Imlay City holding several offices including local financial secretary, treasurer of the Eastern Association Women’s Fellowship, and State Packet Chairperson. She was a Girl Scout leader in the ’40s.

Erma and her husband organized the two Senior Citizen bowling leagues at Cedar Lanes in Imlay City. They worked for many years in the 1960s and 1970s as superintendents at the Imlay City Fair. They were responsible for forming Chapter 127 of the National Camping and Hiking Association, and they were the first presidents of the Green Thumbers. She worked for over 12 years at the Lapeer Hospital gift shop.

Erma continued volunteer work organizing and leading the Lamb-Steele Exercisers, and chairing the first Lamb-Steele Appreciation Day to honor Scott and Zola (Steele) Lamb. At the Center she especially enjoyed the sing-a-longs, playing pool, exercise and other activities with the seniors.

Preceding her in death are her parents and three brothers, Forrest, Lee and Carl; her husband, “Mick;” and her son-in-law, Lyle Powers. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Whiteman Powers; grandchildren, Mical (Janis) Powers, Ronni (Brian Nelson) Powers, Patrick Powers, and Kelly Powers; and great-grandchildren, Torey and Janaye Powers of Imlay City and Britta Powers-Nelson of Brighton. In addition to nieces and nephews, she is survived by sisters-in-law, Nancy Whiteman and Lucy Whiteman Vroman. Erma is survived by a cousin, Harold Laidler, who is 100.

Arrangements for a service in Brighton will be handled by Keehn Funeral Home and there will be a graveside service at the Imlay Township Cemetery on Thursday, July 9th at 4 p.m. in cooperation with the Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Imlay City.
