Reverend Robert A. Garbrecht, age 83, of Evansville, WI passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at home.
He was born on February 1, 1926 in Oconto Falls, WI. He graduated from Oconto Falls High School in 1943.
Robert graduated from Capital University in Columbus, OH in 1949. He graduated from Trinity Seminary in Columbus, OH in 1953. He was ordained on June 28, 1953 at Grace Lutheran Church in Oconto Falls, WI.
Pastor Garbrecht served the following Lutheran Congregations during his 50 year ministry; St. Johnís of Avoca, WI along with Peace of Cobb, WI, St. Paulís of Imlay City, MI, Lutheran Church of Peace in Platteville, WI, St. Johnís in Evansville, WI and finally as visitation Pastor for Christ in Stoughton, WI. Pastor Garbrecht was named Pastor Emeritus in 1990.
Robert was very active in the community serving on numerous church-wide and community boards such as the Conference Coordinator on World Hunger, Dean of Southlake Conference and Retired Clergy, Kiwanis Club, Student Assistance Program, Evansville Community School Board, Community Committee Study of School Needs and the Skaalen Home Board.
Robert continued to enjoy a love of the outdoors fostered during his youth with a love of gardening, golfing, hunting and fishing.
God looked around the garden,
And found an empty space.
He looked down upon the earth,
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you.
And lifted you to rest.
Godís garden must be beautiful.
For he only takes the best.
Robert is survived by his wife Phyllis; sons, James (Mary) Garbrecht of Mundelein, IL and son John (Patti) Garbrecht of Bethesda, MD; daughters, Kathryn (Gregory) Leland of Bricelyn, MN, and Carol (Thomas) Mullin of Anoka, MN. He is also survived by grandchildren, Melissa (Justin) Pieper, Robert Garbrecht, Bethany Garbrecht, Kelsey (Christoph) Dundas, Michael Leland, Brian Leland, Olivia Garbrecht and great grandson Logan Garbrecht. He is also survived by his brother Elmer (Shirley) Garbrecht of Oconto Falls, WI; brother-in-law Donald (Carolyn) Koehl of Reading, OH, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henrietta and Otto Garbrecht.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 2 from 4-8 p.m. at St. Johnís Lutheran Church in Evansville, WI. Visitation will also be held from 9:30-10:30 at St. Johnís Lutheran Church in Evansville, WI prior to funeral services Friday, April 3 at 10:30 with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery Evansville. Friends and family are invited to return to church for a light luncheon after the burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your local church mission project, Habitat for Humanity, Capital University or Trinity Seminary, both of Columbus, OH.
