Gladys VanderPloeg, 89, of Imlay City, passed away suddenly Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at her home.

Gladys Eileen Brandt was born January 11, 1920 in Holland, MI the oldest child of Almon and Anna Brandt, Sr. They moved to the Imlay City area from the west side of Michigan.

Gladys graduated from Imlay City High School. She was married to Arnold “Arnie” VanderPloeg on May 23, 1940 in Imlay City. Arnie died in 1985.

She had worked for a short time as a waitress and when needed on her brothers’ carrot farms, but mostly she was a homemaker raising her family. She was a member of the Imlay City Christian Reformed Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn (Paul) Campbell of Imlay City; her son, Arthur “Art’’ (Linda) VanderPloeg of Imlay City; son-in-law, Larry Smith of Imlay City; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert (Kathy) Brandt of Imlay City and Larry (Elaine) Brandt of Imlay City; sisters, Esther Jager Eckel of Imlay City, Myrtle “Myke” (Art) Vlieg of Imlay City, Ruby Meyer of Imlay City, and Shirley (Ron) Gruizenga of Kalamazoo; and sisters-in-law, Helena Brandt and Eleanor Brandt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold “Arnie,” a daughter, Sylvia Smith; parents, Almon and Anna Brandt, Sr.; and brothers, Bud Brandt, Lindy Brandt and Al Brandt.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 13 at Imlay City Christian Reformed Church. The Reverend Kenneth VanderHorst, pastor of the Imlay City Christian Reformed Church, officiated. Burial followed in the Imlay Township Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were made by Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Imlay City.
