Sharon Lorayne Billiau, age 72 of Almont, died February 7, 2009 at home surrounded by her children after a prolonged illness.

She was born in Detroit on December 9, 1936 to Thomas and Lorayne Blower and was married to her high school sweetheart Richard Billiau on December 15, 1953.

After the last of her five children entered school, Sharon began college, graduating from Wayne State University with honors. She started her teaching career at Dryden Elementary School where she touched the lives of thousands of children and parents as first a remedial reading teacher and then principal. During this time she obtained her Masterís in Education and a Masterís in Administration. Even after she retired, Sharon started her own private school, Country Day Academy, where she continued to help those with varying needs and where she could put into practice her own philosophy of teaching. She had a love of learning and teaching, inspiring her students to do and be their best with the belief that everyone can learn and there are limitless possibilities for each of us.

She was an avid reader and, in the spirit of a lifetime of learning, became certified as an EMT. Later, she and Richard traveled the world taking cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean as well as trips to New Zealand and Australia.

Sharon is survived by her five children, Susan (Robert) Davis of Almont, Kurtis (Christy) Billiau of Chesterfield, Rebecca (Eric) Goldenberg of Ormond-by- the-Sea, FL, Robin (Daniel) Axsom of Dryden, and Merry (John) Lenz of Davison. She leaves behind 14 grandchildren: Adam, Andrew, Jessica, Nicole (Nick), David (Lacey), Trista, Justyn, Josh, Kailee, Emily, Daniel, Erik, Jay, and Hayley. Also she leaves behind her great grandchildren, Gabriel, Alexander, and Arriyanna. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas R. (Helen) Blower. Sharon was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Billiau; her brother, Gary (Betsy) Blower; and her parents, Thomas E. Blower and Lorayne Emma (Lewis) Blower.

Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be given to your local public library in her name.

Funeral arrangements were made by Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer.
