Leona Markwart

Leona Markwart, 86, of Lapeer, formerly of Capac, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2008.

She was born December 15, 1921 in Romeo to James and Mary (Brough) Boyer. They moved to a farm north of Capac. She attended a country school, then on to Capac High School where she graduated.

Leona then atended Eastern Michigan University. She married Harold E. Markwart on September 1, 1943 at the First United Methodist Church, Capac, where she was a Sunday School teacher for 25 years.

Harold and Leona purchased Clark Oil & Gas Company in 1962.

Mrs. Markwart was the secretary and bookkeeper for 25 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of the Capac First Methodist Church, Capac Chamber of Commerce and Capac Senior Citizen. She was the treasurer of the United Methodist Women for 25 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Markwart held the head position at the M.Y.F. for a good many years and were members of the Michigan Petroleum Association. She had been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since their move to Lapeer.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Markwart of Lapeer; daughter, Judith Ann (special friend, Wil Smith) Markwart of Lapeer; granddaughter, Crystal (Brian) Wrubel; and great-grandsons, Joshua and Cody. She was preceded in death by sons, Gerald Edward and Laurie Edwin Markwart; her parents; and brother, Charles Boyer.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 18 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Lapeer with Rev. Ralph H. Pieper, II officiating. Burial took place in Lynn Township Cemetery, Yale. Arrangements were made by Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.
