Margaret R. Wallace, 92, of Fort Gratiot Township, and formerly of Capac, died unexpectedly Friday, February 8, 2008 at Port Huron Hospital.

She was born October 23, 1915 in Imlay City, the daughter of the late Donald and Ella Willing Gleason.

Her marriage to Gerls B. Wallace was June 4, 1936 at her grandmother’s home in Lapeer. The couple were married 62 years before his passing on November 28, 1998.

Margaret was a Lapeer High School graduate. She received her teaching certificate from Lapeer County Normal and her Bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan College. She later earned her Master’s degree in special education from Eastern Michigan University. Margaret’s teaching career spanned 40 years. She taught at four rural schools, Yale Public and Capac Community schools. She was the last teacher to hold class at the one room Lynn Township Corners School now the “Heritage School” located at Goodells County Park.

Margaret was a co-owner with her husband of the Capac Supermarket for over 20 years. She attended the First United Methodist Church in Capac and enjoyed spending time with Gerls up north at the Hiawatha Club in Paradise. She loved the woods and in her earlier years liked deer hunting and fishing. She also enjoyed solving crosswords, reading, china painting, crocheting, and knitting. Margaret especially liked playing cards with her family, including cribbage and five hundred.

Surviving are a son and daughter in law, John G. and Sue Wallace of Port Huron; a daughter, Mary M. Wallace of Palm Beach, Florida; four grandchildren, Amy Burba, Jeff, Jill, and Jennifer Wallace; four great-grandchildren, Kira, Mason, Addison, and Trevor; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding her in death is a sister, Barbara Rhody.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 12 at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Capac. Rev. Dale Brown, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Capac, officiated. Burial took place in Capac Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Four County Community Foundation Education Fund and the First United Methodist Church, Capac.
