Helen Meier, 72, of the Attica/Metamora area, passed away Friday, January 11, 2008 after a short illness at the Marlette Hospice Center.

Helen Jean Sutton was born November 13, 1935 in Detroit. She was one of eight children of John and Martha (Thomas) Sutton. She grew up in Warren. She attended and graduated from high school in East Detroit. She attended Detroit Bible College where she met her husband-to-be. She was married to Carl August Meier on June 19, 1954 in Detroit.

Over the years Helen had been employed by Michigan Bell Telephone as a Service Representative, worked for J.L. Gardner in Lapeer as a realtor; and she was a school bus driver for Imlay City High School where she retired after 15 years. At the schools, she was the Union Steward for the Bus Drivers and Custodians, was one of the first coaches for the Varsity girls’ track program for 5 years, and won the Friend of Youth Award given by the students of Imlay City High School.

She was a member of the Michigan Retired School Personnel, and also the First Baptist Church of Attica, where she had served as church clerk/secretary, Sunday School teacher and leader of the HHH group. She also played the piano there for the last 30+ years; She had played the piano and organ for more than 50 years, often playing at church, funerals and weddings.

Surviving are her husband, Carl Meier of Metamora; sons, Arthur (Sandra) Meier of Canadian Lakes and Paul (Jennifer) Meier of Lapeer; daughters, Roxann (Bob) Messner of Lum, Corinne (Bill) Poppeck of Lake Orion, Lorie (Kenny) Hodges of Attica and Sue (James) Fish of North Branch; and sisters, Joyce (Mark) Ecker of Petoski, Frances (Don) Martin of Grand Rapids, Florence (Dave) Bodine of Chicago and Carol Sutton of Warren. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, Michael (Charla), Melissa, Mitch, Corey, Christopher (Sarah), Kirstin, Samantha, Jordan, Rachel, Zachary, Myron, Havilah, Tyler and Cameron; and great-grandson, Paul. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Martha (Thomas) Sutton; a granddaughter, Kacy Renee Hodges (in 1998) and by sisters, Eileen Sutton, Alice Sutton and Evelyn Sutton.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, January 15 at the First Baptist Church of Attica. Pastor David Hill and Pastor Peter DeKlerk officiated. Burial followed in the Arcadia Township Cemetery, Lum.
