Albert Leonard

Age: 77
Albert Leonard, 77, of North Branch, died October 17, 2007 at Lapeer Regional Medical Center. Al was born August 21, 1930 in Capac the son of Paul and Helen (Arledge) Leonard. He attended Capac High School.

Al proudly served his country in the Army in Korea. When he returned home, he married the love of his life, Phyllis Smith, on March 24, 1951 in Capac. Together they made their home and raised their family in North Branch where they still live.

Al retired from General Motors in 1987 after many years of service. While working for General Motors, he continued working for Blackburn Funeral Home as well as the North Branch Ambulance Service. His loyalty was second to none. During his 54 years of working at the funeral home, he served as a greeter, filed death certificates, drove the hearse and performed many other numerous duties. He also volunteered his time to help families that needed a driver for their medical appointments.

Al was a member of the UAW Local 653, North Branch Lion’s Club, American Legion Post 457, the North Branch Masons and a member of the North Branch Wesleyan Church.

He enjoyed traveling, going to casinos, making airplanes out of aluminum cans, and calling Bingo at the American Legion Hall but nothing gave him more pleasure than working with and helping people. Al will be missed not only by his family, but also by the entire North Branch community.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughters, Brenda (Walt) Dudock of Clifford and Beth (Tim) Griewahn of North Branch; sons, Brian (Debbie) Leonard of North Branch, Brett (Denise) Leonard of North Branch, and Bart (fiancee Ginger) Leonard of Clifford; sister, Doris (Daryl) Stebbins of Metamora; brothers, Charles (Doris) Leonard of Colorado, Lee (Helen) Leonard of California, and James (Shirley) Leonard of Texas; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law Pauline and Robert Weeks, brother and sister-in-law, George (Ray) and Nancy Leonard.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 23 at North Branch Wesleyan Church with Pastor Peter Damaska officiating.

A Masonic service was held Monday evening at Blackburn Chapel-Martin Funeral Home in North Branch. Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery.
