Age: 81
Nathan “Lyle” Dougherty, 81, of Almont, MI, died suddenly Sept. 18 at his home. The son of Elvin Wilfred “Kelly” Dougherty and Anna Marie McGuire, Lyle was born in Detroit, June 11, 1926.

Lyle is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth (Garceau); sons, Lyle (Cathy) Dougherty and Thomas Dougherty; daughters, Lynda (Thomas) Wearing and Valerie (Russell) Hanselman; grandchildren, Shannon and Casey Wearing, Russell J., Katie and Maxwell Hanselman; Lyle T. and Lyndsay Dougherty; great-grandchildren, Annika and Aubrey Tessmer; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and treasured friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Elvin (Sue) Dougherty and George “Cecil” (Maxine) Dougherty and stepmother Erma Dougherty.

A 1944 graduate of St. Catherine’s Church in Detroit, he was a starting lineman (#40) on the football team. Lyle served in the U.S. Navy and was active in the VFW, serving as post commander at the Claire T. Lathaem Post in Eastpointe, and as commander of the Thimm-Harmon VFW Post 203 in Berville.

He was the proprietor of D&W Washer Sales & Service in Detroit for many years until his retirement and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Allenton.

Lyle was very proud of his Irish heritage and several years ago he had the good fortune to visit the Emerald Isle, along with his twin brother, Elvin (Al) Dougherty, and eldest son, Lyle A. Dougherty.

He was also particularly proud of his nine grandchildren and grandchildren, always maintaining an active and supportive role in their lives.

A memorial service was held Sunday, September 23 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Capac Rd. in Allenton, with Fr. Gerry Frawley officiating.
