Age: 70
Mary Ellen Schmit, 70, of Royal Oak, passed away after an extended illness Friday, September 14, 2007 at her daughter’s home in Imlay City, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary Ellen Miles was born October 2, 1936 in Dryden, the daughter of Howard and Lena (Fischer) Miles. She grew up in Almont and graduated from the Almont High School in the Class of 1954. She lived most of her life in the Almont area.

She was married to Robert R. Schmit on June 6, 1957 in Imlay City. Robert died on October 3, 2005.

Mary was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Royal Oak; a Cub Scout Leader; a Girl Scout Leader; a PTA member; and she taught CCD classes (Catholic Church religious Education Classes).

Mary is survived by her sons, Thomas Schmit of Chillicothe, IL and Mitchell Schmit of Royal Oak; daughters, Crystal (Ray) Long of Imlay City and Monica Schmit of Traverse City; sisters, Fleeta Cowell of Imlay City and Carrie Godo of Imlay City; and brothers, Howard Miles of Imlay City and Donald Miles of Clarkston. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and one great-grandson. She is preceded in death by her husband Robert “Bob” Schmit; a grandson, Justin Robert Schmit on November 2, 2005; brother, Kenneth Miles; and sisters, Gertrude Roy and Doreen Ragatz.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Imlay City. The Reverend Father Ezequiel Mondragon officiated. Burial followed in the Imlay Township Cemetery, Imlay City. A 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening Rosary was held at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Imlay City.
