Hazel Mason, 79, of Attica, passed away after a short illness Saturday, June 2, 2007 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Hazel Jean Schocke was born May 4, 1928 in Almont. She was a daughter of Harry and Edna (Edgett) Schocke. She grew up in Almont and graduated from Almont High School in 1946.

Hazel married Luther John Mason on June 17, 1951 in Almont. She completed her college education by graduating from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in education as a reading specialist.

Hazel had lived in Attica since the mid-1960s. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Michigan University in 1968. She taught in New Baltimore, a country school near Almont and she taught reading at Turrill School in Lapeer. She retired from the Lapeer School District in 1986 as a Reading Specialist.

She was a member of Attica United Methodist Church and Michigan Retired School Teachers Association.

Luther’s Air Force career took them around the world. Hazel loved to travel. They had visited all 50 states, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and parts of Europe and Korea. Their son Tim was born in Japan.

Hazel was a loving individual who positively impacted everyone. She has passed on her love of “God and Country’’ to her children and grandchildren. God has truly blessed us with her presence. There is a great rejoicing in Heaven this day!

Surviving are her husband, Luther Mason of Attica; daughter, Anne (Bruce) Jefferson of Palestine, IL.; sons, Timothy (Patti) Mason of Edgewater, MD. and Mark (Pam) Mason of Attica; 6 grandchildren, Brook Griswold, Sarah Homer, James Mason, Samuel Jefferson, Benjamin Jefferson and Kathryn Jefferson; one great-grandson, Mason Griswold; and sisters-in-law, Peggy Schocke of Lapeer and Clarice Schocke of Laingburg. She was preceded in death by a son, Earl K. Mason in 1978; her parents; and by brothers, Albert Schocke and John Schocke.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at Attica United Methodist Church. Pastor Cliff Schroeder will officiate. Friends may call at Attica United Methodist Church from 10-11 a.m. Saturday morning at the church prior to the memorial services. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Attica United Methodist Church or to Hometown Hospice.

Funeral arrangements were made by Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Imlay City.
