Community Mental Health

To the Editor:

The Michigan League for Human Services strongly opposes the Senate-passed budget for the Department of Community Health. The budget makes additional cuts to critical safety net programs at a time when many families and children are hurting. These cuts come on the heels of deep, painful cuts that have already been made.

The Legislature needs to take a balanced approach in addressing the pending budget deficit. Slashing away at programs aimed at the state's most vulnerable residents is far from a balanced approach. Additional revenues are needed to prevent these Draconian cuts.

In addition, the House GOP budget plan would balance the budget on the backs of children, those with disabilities and the elderly. In tough times, leaders need to stand up and protect vulnerable people, not target them.
