To continue the baseball analogy, your writer, Tom Wearing, is way off base regarding Senator Jim Bunning in his column in the March 3 issue.
If trying times were all that was needed to justify spending borrowed dollars, no budget would ever be balanced as there will always be circumstances where one could rationalize such deficit spending. However Senator Bunning was making a principled stand. Perhaps Mr. Wearing was unaware that approximately 30 days ago the Democratically controlled congress passed, and President Obama signed, a bill requiring "pay as you go." Senator Bunning was simply saying to pass the extension of unemployment benefits, Congress should follow the law it just passed and provide the means to fund the bill.
Elected officials of both parties weep alligator tears and bemoan the increasing deficit, as does President Obama, but few have the courage to back up their talk with action. Isn't it time that we insist that we pay for the things we desire?
Senator Bunning hit a home run. Columnist Wearing is "0" for the week.
