The Family Literacy Center would like to thank Representative and Mrs. Kevin Daley for their most recent donation to the Family Literacy Center.
The Daleys donated $1,000 to support the Center. Their continuing support is deeply appreciated and Kevin's commitment to our community should be a shining example for all those who serve as our elected officials. Representative Daley selected several nonprofit organizations in our community to be the recipients of this very generous level of support.
Literacy is a critical issue facing our community. One in five adults functions at the lowest literacy levels. They cannot accurately fill out a job application, follow directions on prescription medications nor properly prepare their children for challenges in school. Our program, however, is helping individuals improve their skills and reach toward their dreams. We focus on each student's goals and needs through one-to-one tutoring.
From January 1, 2009 through August 31, 2009, we had already served 448 students in the Thumb area of Michigan. We served more students in this eight month period than we have ever served in an entire year in our 29 year history! This dramatic increase in demand for services is happening at the same time when many funding sources are drying up. Our individual and business donations are down dramatically. There is greatly increased competition for grant funds. The grant funding for adult literacy through the state has been cut 25% for the 2009-10 year and the stringent requirements for that funding continue to increase.
A strong and diversified funding base is critical to the success of our organization. The generous support of Representative Daley and many others helps us meet the growing need for literacy services in our community. We thank him for his investment in our program!
