Scouts campaign begins

To the Editor:

The Tall Pine Council, Boy Scouts of America announces the start of the 2009 Product Sale. The event, which will end on October 24, is the largest annual fundraiser for not only the Tall Pine Council, but more importantly units and Scouts.

More than 3,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers in Lapeer, Genesee and Shiawassee Counties will ask community members for fundraising support by purchasing one or several of the popcorn products offered. Scouts also will be offering consumers a variety of elegant candles to purchase from. Funds raised through the candle portion of the sale will also support their Scouting programs. Dollars from the 2009 Popcorn and Candle Sale will help units raise funds to go towards unit activities and materials, such as camping, field outings, camping equipment, monthly meetings, and uniforms. While out and about in the community, Scouts are learning life skills such as salesmanship, team work, leadership, goal setting and commitment.

Eleven varieties of popcorn will be offered, one being a Military Product Donation. For a $25 or $40 donation, consumers will be given a Military Product Donation Receipt that ensures the consumer $25 or $40 in popcorn treats will be shipped to soldiers, sailors and marines in combat areas, Air Force personnel, Army and Navy hospitals, and National Guard families. In 2008 more than 300 tons of popcorn was shipped to military personnel from donations Scouts received across the United States. Other products including the favorite Unbelievable Butter Microwave Popcorn, Chocolate Lover's Tin, Cheese Tin, Gourmet Caramel Corn with Almonds, Pecans and Cashews, and others are available for sale through Tall Pine Council Scouts located in your community. Prices range from $10 to $60 per item. New this year, Scouts will compliment their popcorn selection with a wide variety of 26 different candle products and scents. Candles range from $10 to $24 per item. For more information on the 2009 Popcorn and Candle Sale, call (810) 235-2531.

The Boy Scouts of America teaches young men and women life skills, leadership, community service and responsibility.
