Flooded basement brings ‘flood’ of kindness

To the Editor:

We hear so many songs now about how life was much simpler back in the day. People helped each other without expecting something in return.

I'm here to say that life and people are just as good, if not better, than the old days. At 4:15 a.m. on Sunday, August 9, we discovered 3 ft. and rising of sewage in our basement. By 4:30 a.m. our son-in-law Jimmy was waist deep trying to pump the sewage out. Phone calls were made in search of an extra pump. Despite the hour and their own flood problems, friends and family were showing up with pumps, cleaning supplies, garbage cans, open hearts and willing arms. The day was spent hauling up and throwing out 25 years of memories and treasures.

My sister-in-law called a mandatory break and off to their home where she served lunch and then six more hours of work and back to their house for dinner. Magically dear friends made a feast turn up.

The following week continued with clean-up. Our yearly weekend getaway was this past Saturday. After much debate we decided to go and take a break from the mess. Our son-in-law said he had to work, so he would have to back out. When we came home Sunday, Jimmy, our friend Steve and our nephews Mike and Nick had surprised us by emptying our pole barn and power washing, cleaning and sorting out the whole thing. What a gift!!

It may be 2009 but friends and family still stick together. We are so blessed and grateful to our family and extended family of friends.

God bless you all: Jimmy & Erin, Jeremy & Sarah. Brian & Lori, Mike, Nick, Mom, Scott & Deb, Sandy & Lonnie, Stacey & Jerry, Steve & Terri, Jim & Tammy, Joel, Ted & Chuck, Raul, and Raul & Norma.

Thank you all so much.
