Lapeer County’s Relay For Life empowers local community

To the Editor:

On June 12-13 more than 800 residents from around Lapeer County rallied together in their fight against cancer by participating in the Relay For Life of Lapeer County, the American Cancer Society's signature event. The 13th annual Relay was a tremendous success, raising $151,000 to aid in the American Cancer Society's ongoing programs of research, education, advocacy and service.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life, a team-based fundraising event, is a unique, empowering and fun way to make a difference in the fight against cancer. This past weekend, participants spent 24 hours at Eastern Michigan Fairgrounds, celebrating the lives of cancer survivors, remembering loved ones lost to cancer and fighting back against a disease that has taken too much from too many.

At the heart of Relay For Life were two opportunities to pay tribute to those who have battled cancer. During the Victory Lap, 148 cancer survivors from the surrounding community walked a celebratory lap around the track together, signifying their victory over a disease which claims the lives of one in four Americans each year. At sundown, more than 1,400 luminaria were lit in honor and in memory of those who have battled cancer. The candles continued to burn throughout the night, lighting a path that will one day lead to a cure.

This year was a special Fight Back ceremony which empowered community members to make a pledge to save one life from cancer before next year's event. More than 50 friends, family, neighbors and co-workers committed to fighting cancer year-round.

The 2009 American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Lapeer County was made possible by numerous community sponsors, including Lapeer Michigan HOG Chapter, Great Lakes Cancer Institute, Lapeer Regional Medical Center, M K Chambers, New Life Media, Ray C's, Walmart, City Animation, Eastern Michigan Fairgrounds, Meijer, the Tri-City Times, The County Press, LA View, plus many more generous sponsors.
