So-called ‘sin taxes’ unfairly treat a segment of population

To the Editor:

I just wanted to comment upon Catherine Minolli's column in the April 8 edition of the Tri-City Times entitled, "Tax some more, then ask...what for?" regarding the recent increase in taxes on cigarettes. I have been saying the same thing for years now...ever since the first "tobacco tax" increase. Why target the "smokers and the drinkers" for tax increases, as opposed to anyone else that lives, breathes, and pays taxes?

We all know smoking is a dirty habit, it smells, stinks, discolors things, offends certain people, and kills hundreds of thousands a year from cancer. Nevertheless, I never dreamed these so-called "sin taxes" would escalate to the proportions they have today.

Thanks to our governor, first it was 25 cents, then 50 cents, then an additional $1.65 cents tax...then pretty soon the price of a premium carton of cigarettes rose to a whopping $75 plus tax!!!!! How is this fair? Does it matter at all that the "smokers" are being targeted...forget the others!

It has became what it has thanks to our government. How long will we people continue to allow such biases?

I say let's make it even. Let's tax the "SPORTS" people....yes the sports junkies! Every item purchased, whether it's a glove, a hockey stick, roller blades, elbow pads, or even a ... well, you know. Let's tax THEM $8.01 dollars on all purchases! How would they like that? Whooooaaah! Now it's a different story, eh? I imagine so, which is just the message I'm trying to convey...STOP TARGETING THE SMOKERS AND DRINKERS! We too are living, breathing, working, and taxpaying individuals! Make it fair across the board. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Period.

All in all, I want to say thank you to Catherine for her column...I certainly appreciated it.
