4-H honors handed out

To the Editor:

The Lapeer County 4-H Program recognized adult volunteers, 4-H members, Clubs and outstanding supporters of 4-H at the Spring Achievement program on March 14.

The 2008 royalty, Tricia Lankton, Justin Shaver, Mallory Tanis and Chad Weiss, emceed the program and crowned the 2009 royalty. Crowned were Ariel Abbey, queen; Colin Hile, king; Emily Straight, princess; Jake Newton, prince. We thank the outgoing royalty for their excellent service and welcome the new 4-H royalty. Special thanks to Carol Straight, royalty sponsor.

Three clubs were recognized with a $50 award for outstanding programming. Country Kids 4-H Club received an award for the best community service project of 2008 for their work in sending packages to the troops in Iraq, demonstrating butter churning and milking at Davis Brothers Farm Fest, participating in a petting zoo at Fischers Nursing Home, and donating a basket of items to LACADA.

Almont Swine 4-H Club went ice skating in Lapeer, worked the Lapeer Soup Kitchen, and had a balloon toss to win the award for the best social programs of the year. The North Branch Bird 4-H Club was recognized as having the educational programs for traveling to St. Clair County for a meat and layer bird workshop, to MSU for an all-day poultry clinic, and practicing their knowledge with a skillathon contest.

Three special awards were given to honor Friends of 4-H. They went to American Speedy Printing, Rick and Virginia Pearson, Howard Stack, Dr. Barbara Chapman, and Liberty Rental. All of these people and organizations are indeed Friends of 4-H and of young people.

4-H volunteers are all extraordinary people who do extraordinary things to help kids, but every year the 4-H Program honors volunteers who have gone above and beyond by recognizing them as 4-H Leader of the Year. This year the honor went to Jannie Romska of Attica who has volunteered in many 4-H roles for 21 years.

We appreciate all of the support.
