Take note of important tax deadlines in Goodland Township
To the Editor,
The state legislature completed work on HB6623 on Dec. 15. The new legislation will now be forwarded to the governor for signature and should be signed by the end of the year.
The legislation states that when the last day to pay taxes without penalty and interest falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is automatically extended to the next business day. This reflects past practices across the state and conforms to other general statutes within state law. This also means that treasurers are not legally required to be in their offices on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 and instead are required to be in their offices on Monday, March 2, 2009.
Communities where taxes can be paid until the end of February without interest will now have until March 2 to pay their taxes in 2009. Under this legislation, taxes are turned over to the county on March 3, 2009 because of the weekend.
Goodland Township residents wanting to apply their tax payment to their 2008 taxes have until Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008 to pay at the township hall. If residents do not want their payment applied to their 2008 taxes, they have until Feb. 17, 2009 to pay their taxes at the Goodland Township Hall without interest and penalty. Payment can also be made at the township hall until March 2, 2009, but after Feb. 17 there will be interest and penalty applied. any payments made after March 2, 2009 must be made to the Lapeer County Treasurer.
