The Family Literacy Center is pleased to announce that they were recently awarded a special grant from Verizon.
This grant, which is over $5,000, will help support the adult literacy services. The Center offers free, one-to-one tutoring for adults who live or work in the Lapeer County area and want to improve their reading, writing, basic math or English-speaking skills. The tutoring is based on the goals of the student. More than 15 Family Literacy Center students have obtained the GEDs in 2008. Many have entered training programs and all work hard to build their basic skills.
Verizon has been a long-time supporter of the Center. This grant will help the Center purchase needed supplies, train tutors and keep this valuable service available to adults in our community. If you would like to volunteer with the Family Literacy Center or are interested in becoming a student, contact us at 810-664-2737 or visit our website at www.readlapeer.org. There are many volunteer positions listed on the website for those with special skills or interests.
