No treatments, cures from stem cell research

Dear Editor,

I address this to all voters:

I am so tired of those in favor of embryonic stem cell research being deceitful and not telling the whole truth. They continually speak of "stem cell" research and the need for continued testing (using our tax dollars I might add) to find new treatments and cures for many diseases. They leave out the word "embryonic" to avoid offending the sensibilities of those of us who believe in the sanctity of life.

What they don't tell us is that in over 25 years of research using human embryos, not one single viable treatment or cure has been found. Not one! Not only have millions of dollars been spent, but many potential lives (human embryos) have been destroyed. In addition, those attempts at using embryonic stem cells for cures have resulted in cancerous and noncancerous tumors. This is most likely due to the fact that embryonic stem cells are too immature. There is also a great risk of rejection of these embryonic stem cells by the new host because there is no way to test for compatibility. The bank of embryonic stem cells is far too limited to provide for testing for immune rejection or compatibility.

On the other hand, over 70 treatments and cures have been found using "adult" stem cells. Adult stem cells are those found in umbilical cord blood, amniotic fluid, bone marrow and skin cells. Adult stem cells can be easily obtained, multiply rapidly and do not destroy human life when harvested. I have no doubt that continued research using adult stem cells will result in many more discoveries of cures and treatments for disease. Let's encourage our government to spend its (our) money wisely and put tax dollars where they will have the most benefit.

Even if you don't care about sanctity of life issues, why should tax dollars be thrown away on testing that has proven to be a huge waste of money?

Please vote no on Proposal 2.
