No-smoking regulation breathes in extra life

Dear Editor,

July 17, 2008 marked the one-year anniversary of the St. Clair County Smoke Free Worksite Regulation. The regulation applies to all county worksites with the exception of tobacco specialty stores, private residences, restaurants, bars and establishments where Bingo is played.

It is important for worksites to remember that they are required to have a written smoking policy available to employees. To meet compliancy, 'No Smoking' signage must also be posted at every entrance and exit. There is no designated "foot" rule prohibiting smoking within a certain distance from a building, however smoking areas should not be located near doorways, windows or ventillation system intakes.

The St. Clair County Health Department continues to actively enforce the regulation. Information on the regulation can be found online at www.stclaircounty.org/offices/health under "clean indoor air regulation." 'No Smoking' decals are available at the health department at no charge. Contact 810-987-5300, ext. 204 for more information.

Susan Amato, Director of Health Education & Planning, St. Clair County Health Dept.
