Use campaign funds to help families in need

Dear Editor,

On a June drive from Lapeer I was dismayed by the super-abundance of large campaign signs along roads. How sad to witness the extremes some men will go to when seeking to become our state representative!

Rich men are spending tens of thousands of dollars each (from fundraisers) trying to be chosen August 5. More money is being spent during this primary campaign than a state representative's yearly salary. With Michigan's fragile economy should we send a big spender to Lansing?

Many have left Lapeer County seeking work; the unemployment rate is near 10 percent. Too many have lost homes while struggling to find jobs, buy food and gasoline, pay taxes and living expenses. Places like Love INC have no funds to help the needy. So many are poor, existing yearly on less than what several candidates will spend on their campaigns.

What a difference the $100,000 or more being spent on this primary campaign could make if it were used to help those in need in Lapeer County. To me all the political spending wastes precious resources and benefits few.

Let's learn about each man's ideas and plans for the future, decide on one and vote on August 5.
