Everyday heroes honored

Dear Editor,

On Friday, May 16, the American Red Cross Genesee Lapeer Chapter held their 12th annual Salute to Everyday Heroes at the Captain's Club of Woodfield. Twelve individuals were honored, as they risked their own lives to save the life of another, or they have provided inspiration and hope to our community.

The American Red Cross Genesee-Lapeer Chapter was proud to honor the following individuals as their 2008 Salute to Everyday Heroes:

Youth Good Samaritan: Paul Cunningham, Jr.; Law Enforcement Everyday Hero: Officer Wes Evans of the Grand Blanc Township Police Dept. and Nancy Arellano, R.N.; Emergency Medical Response Everyday Hero: Candy Allen, Lapeer County Central Dispatch; Adult Good Samaritans: Jennifer Smith, Kendal Smith, Jesse Gonzales, Eric White, Bobby Taylor and Jennifer Locke - Genesee Parks & Recreation/Bluebell Beach; Workplace Good Samaritans: Chris Clolinger, Gary Parr — University of Michigan Recreation Center; Community Good Samaritan: Thomas Landaal, accepted by his wife, Renee.

The Salute to Everyday Heroes event was started as a way for the Red Cross to honor individuals who embody their mission of responding to emergencies. Red Cross volunteers respond to disasters—predominantly home fires—offering food, clothing, counseling, and shelter.
