From afar I keep an eye on what is happening in my hometown community of Almont, especially those activities that involve youth. Currently in my world I work with school districts across my new home state of Alaska, trying to make these communities better for kids. We have a program entitled Alaska Initiative for Community Engagement (Alaska ICE) and in this program we help fund the Spirit of Youth, an organization that recognizes the GOOD things youth do and honors them for it.
I wish Michigan had this award, as every student at my alma mater Almont High School should be honored for the recent buzz around Homecoming activities. The selfless activity of selecting Joey Gyergyov and Janelle Zott as king and queen show the integrity and support of the young people in this community. At a time when youth get labeled as selfish and self centered, Almont youth took a higher road.
The editorial and letter to the editor of their 'crowning' has floated around my office and every adult here gets a tear in their eye and responds in the same way, indicating what a wonderful community that must be. I agree.
As we all know, where we come from shapes where we are, and I am proud to say that I am a product of Almont and the actions of the students there reinforce that feeling in me. Good job kids of Almont and Congratulations Joey and Janelle, you are both amazing people.
