Upgrades great, but can we afford them?

Dear Editor,

On Aug. 8, St. Clair County voters will decide whether to put a half-mill property tax to fund upgrades in emergency communications. Those pushing the tax told me the tax was only on residential property, but the wording on the ballot means ALL property real (houses, farms, businesses) and personal (equipment, inventory).

As seems to be the case with many things in St. Clair County, deception is the rule. Remember the county building and the jail boondoggles? Can we trust our county commissioners with more of our money?

These upgrades will be great, but with the economy as it exists, I don't believe the property owners can afford it. Farmers and businesses will be hit hard with the new tax. We don't need more taxes.

Vote NO on Aug. 8
