I am very surprised and upset about Tom Wearing's column on bicyclists. Has he ever owned a bicycle? Maybe he's one of those people who stay at home depressed and need to vent about things he doesn't know about.
Bicycling is a great form of exercise and we don't harm the environment. Yes we all wish the road was wider and we do get scared that someone will hit us but we enjoy this wonderful form of exercise.
Bicycling also gets you in shape and helps you to stay in a good mood. Of course we have "rogue cyclists" just as there are rogue drivers. But instead of putting us down and getting other people upset why doesn't Tom be educational and tell people that bicyclists have the same road rules as cars do?
He talks about getting us off the main roads just because we don't look as "cool" as a motorcyclists— that's just ridiculous. I own a motorcycle also and couldn't believe that comment. I do use the back roads as much as I can to stay away from people like Tom but that is not always possible. And also road bikes (the ones with the skinny wheels) cannot go on the dirt roads.
Tom says he honks at us "freaks," well good for him. I'm sure he honks at a lot of things. I think maybe he should slow down and enjoy the outdoors more, maybe try walking on the side of the road for exercise, but then again maybe those people are "freaks" or psycho walkers also.
