Columnist helps to rekindle memories

Dear Editor,

I so very much appreciated Doug Hunter's recent column about the Savage clan, sent to me by my father's cousin, Don Seidell of Capac.

My father was Bill Sharrard. Upon the death of my mother, Jean Morden Sharrard (who was raised in Capac by her aunt and uncle, Isabelle and Allen MacDougall) in 1997 my dad moved to Falcon's Landing, an Air Force retirement home in Sterling, Virginia, near where I live.

It was so nice to see pictures and stories related by Doug that I had grown up with. My mother was also very close to Grandma Savage when the Savages lived in Capac. I was in Michigan in March and did a "grand tour" of the cemeteries with my aunt, Molly Sharrard Dailey. My grandmother, Mina, was a remarkable woman, and instilled in her children, and thus her grandchildren, a love of country, education, music, adventure, and family. I have brought those Michigan roots to Virginia, as have my cousins in Oregon, Wisconsin, and Texas. Thank you for writing about all of us.

Carpe Diem!...Enjoy the day!

(a little Latin for you from a retired Latin teacher!)
