Record attendance at Power Day

Dear Editor,

The Valley Area Agency on Aging (VAAA) Senior Power Day 2007 held at Crossroads Village in Flint on May 23 had record attendance with senior citizens participating in the one-day celebration. For the past 28 years, in recognition of Older Americans Month, VAAA has sponsored this annual informative and entertaining event for the senior citizens of Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee counties.

Three levels of sponsors contributed greatly to Senior Power Day 2007. Major sponsors included: Genesee County Parks & Recreation Commission, UAW Region 1C, UAW Region 1C Retirees, HealthPlus of Michigan, and American House. Contributing sponsors included: Union Prescription Center, WFNT Unforgettable 1470 AM, Hurley Medical Center, Jeff Wright, Genesee County Drain Commissioner, Mass Transportation Authority, GCCARD/Senior Food Program, Sun Valley Foods, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Genesys Health System. Additional Sponsors & Donors included: Plante Moran, Senior Director's Association of Genesee County, Citizens Bank, David Leyton, Genesee County Prosecutor, FJ Grafik, Inc., and Valley Area Agency on Aging.

The seniors enjoyed a wonderful day and positive comments were received regarding Senior Power Day. The day was filled with fun entertainment and informative information for those that participated. This was the first year that all 2,000 tickets were sold out before the event. Seniors age 60+ and older purchased a $3 ticket that included admission to Crossroads Village, free vintage rides on the Ferris Wheel, Carousel, and the Huckleberry Railroad. Musical entertainment for the day was provided by the following performers: Razz-Ma-Tazz Kitchen Band, Burton Senior Center, Hasselbring Choir, Hassel-bring Community Center, Flushing Road Runners, Flushing Singers, Flushing United Methodist Church, and Flushing over the Hill Gang, Flushing Senior Center. In the afternoon a boxed lunch was served by Genesee County Community Action Resource Department (GCCARD).

VAAA, created in 1974, is a private, non-profit organization committed to providing advocacy, services and programs which help elderly and disabled individuals remain living independently in their homes with dignity for as long as possible.
