TRI-CITY AREA —Imlay City Coach John Topie registered his 400th career win, combined girls and boys, with a 36-33 victory over visiting Yale in a Blue Water Area Conference varsity girls' basketball encounter last Thursday.
The outcome brought Topie's career mark to 400-200.
That included stints with both the Capac and Imlay City girls' and boys' basketball programs.
At Capac, Topie directed the girls' basketball team to four league (1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001) and five district (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004) titles.
He also guided the Capac boys' basketball squad to one league (1998) and two district (1997, 1999) championships.
Both the Capac girls' and boys' basketball teams reached the Sweet 16 during the 1999 campaign.
At Imlay City, Topie directed the boys' basketball squad to one league (1990) and two district (1987, 1990) titles.
He also guided the Imlay City girls' basketball team to one league (2005) championship.
"None of this would have been possible without good players," Topie acknowledged. "I have been blessed with very good players, especially during that run at Capac," he noted.
"We have also had good players at Imlay City who have gone on to play at the next level. I am proud of their accomplishments as well. Without them none of this would be possible."
