Day gets 500th

IMLAY CITY — Imlay City Coach Ken Day notched his 500th career win, that coming via a favorable 63-18 verdict over Lapeer East's wrestling team in a non-league clash at home last Thursday.

The outcome brought Day's career mark to 500-249-4. That includes an 8-1 start to the 2010-11 campaign.

He has been at the helm of Imlay City's wrestling program since the 1981 season.

In that time, Imlay City has won seven league (1983, 1985, 1986, 1990, 1991, 1994 and 1997) and seven district (1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2002) championships along the way.

"This was a big win for our program and I am proud of that," Day said. "The kids deserve all the credit for what we achieved," he noted.

"There have been a lot of outstanding wrestlers come through these doors. We have also had some good assistant coaches teaching them. Together they have helped make Imlay City a successful program year in and year out."

Kevin Kissane has been covering high school sports for the Tri-City Times since 1985. When not standing on a field or court with his camera and notepad, he enjoys golf, travel and family. Kevin is a 1980 graduate of Capac High School, and is also a grad of St. Clair Community College and earned a degree in journalism from Central Michigan University.
