Tri-City Times selects All-Area boys' cross country team

TRI-CITY AREA — With one runner below 16 minutes, one more under 17, three more below 18 and another three under 18:25, this year's edition of The Tri-City Times All-Area boys' cross country team is a lineup most any coach would like to have.

Here is a look at who made the squad and the credentials they generated to attain those accolades:

Dylan Creger, Almont.

Creger logged a school record-setting time of 15:48.5 en route to a second-place finish at the Division 3 state finals on Saturday, November 6.

Michigan International Speedway, in Brooklyn, is where the action unfolded.

The senior earned the distinction of race pacesetter at the Capac Invitational, Marine City Invitational, Brown City Invitational, a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Cros-Lex High School, the Almont High School-based Foxes and Hounds Meet, the Marysville Invitational and the Caro-based Thumb Meet of Champions; plus furnished seconds at the Algonac Invitational, a Wolcott Farms-based Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet, the final Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Goodells County Park; a Goodells County Park-based Division 3 regional; and at the Division 3 state finals at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn (earning All-State accolades as a result).

Creger concluded his second full year on Almont's squad as an All-Blue Water Area Conference first team selection.

David Burkland, Almont.

Burkland registered a 16:51 clocking, paving the way to a 54th Saturday, November 6 at the Division 3 state finals.

Michigan International Speedway, in Brooklyn, is where the action unfolded.

The junior obtained fourths at the Capac Invitational and at a Goodells County Park-based Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet; pulled up fifth at the Lapeer County Meet hosted by North Branch High School; collected eighths at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Cros-Lex High School, the Almont High School-based Foxes and Hounds Meet, a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Wolcott Farms and at a Goodells County Park-based Division 3 regional; generated a 10th at the Brown City Invitational; supplied 13ths at the Marine City Invitational and Harbor Beach Invitational; registered a 17th at the Algonac Invitational; contributed an 18th at the Marysville Invitational; plus tacked on a 54th at the Division 3 state finals hosted by Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

He finished his third season on Almont's team as an All-Blue Water Area Conference first team choice.

Josh Klebba, Almont.

Klebba posted a 17:21 time en route to 13th at a Goodells County Park-based Division 3 regional on Saturday, October 30.

The junior pulled up seventh at the Capac Invitational; registered a 10th at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree hosted by Cros-Lex High School; obtained 11ths at the Brown City Invitational and at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree hosted by Goodells County Park; took 13th at a Goodells County Park-based Division 3 regional; collected a 16th at the Marine City Invitational; ranked 20th at the Caro-based Thumb Championships; crossed the finish-line 24th at the Marysville Invitational; supplied a 25th at the Foxes and Hounds Meet hosted by Almont High School; managed a 27th at the Algonac Invitational; contributed a 35th at the Harbor Beach Invitational; wound up 37th at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Wolcott Farms; and added a 159th at the Division 3 state finals hosted by Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

Troy Harbin, Imlay City.

Harbin generated a 17:40 clocking, paving the way to 26th Saturday, October 30 at a Division 2 regional hosted by Goodells County Park.

The sophomore claimed a fifth at the Capac Invitational; took 16th at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Cros-Lex High School; managed a 15th at the Brown City Invitational; collected a 16th at a Goodells County Park-based Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet; supplied a 21st at the Marlette Invitational; wound up 22nd at the Caro-based Thumb Championships; ranked 26th at a Division 2 regional hosted by Goodells County Park; and tacked on a 37th at the Almont High School-based Foxes and Hounds Meet.

Matt Van Dyk,

Imlay City.

Van Dyk supplied a 17:56 time en route to an 34th at the Harbor Beach Invitational on Saturday, October 2.

The sophomore pulled up 17th at the Capac Invitational; raced to an 18th at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Wolcott Farms; took 20th at a Goodells County Park-based Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet; generated a 34th at the Harbor Beach Invitational; claimed a 35th at the Brown City Invitational; registered 39ths at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Cros-Lex High School and a Goodells County Park-based Division 2 regional; plus added a 45th at the Caro-based Thumb Area Championships.

Kyle Robinson, Almont

Robinson provided an 18:09 time, paving the way to 28th Saturday, October 30 at a Division 3 regional hosted by Goodells County Park.

The junior, a third-year runner on Almont's squad, took 11th at a Wolcott Farms-based Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet; pulled up 13th at the Capac Invitational; notched a 15th at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Cros-Lex High School; contributed a 17th at the Almont High School-based Foxes and Hounds Meet; was 24th at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Goodells County Park; claimed a 26th at the Brown City Invitational; obtained a 28th at Goodells County Park-based Division 3 regional; supplied 30ths at the Marine City Invitational, Algonac Invitational and North Branch High School-based Lapeer County Meet; generated a 32nd at the Caro-based Thumb Area Championships; plus added a 203rd at the Division 3 state finals contested at Brooklyn's Michigan International Speedway.

Josue Leon, Imlay City.

Leon supplied an 18:13 clocking en route to a 42nd at a Goodells County Park-based Division 2 regional on Saturday, October 30.

The sophomore logged a 13th at the Marlette Invitational; contributed a 16th at the Capac Invitational; collected 23rds at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Wolcott Farms and Goodells County Park-based Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet; pulled up 25th at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Cros-Lex High School; garnered a 29th at the Caro-based Thumb Area Championships; registered a 36th at the Brown City Invitational; supplied a 42nd at Goodells County Park-based Division 2 regional; provided a 46th at the Harbor Beach Invitational; obtained a 50th at the Almont High School-based Foxes and Hounds Meet; and added a 68th at the Marysville Invitational.

Josh Kunath, Almont.

Kunath checked in with a 18:20 time, paving the way 205th-place finish Saturday, November 6 at the Division 3 state finals.

The senior registered a 19th at the Capac Invitational; pulled up 23rd at the Brown City Invitational; raced to a 24th at the Almont High School-based Foxes and Hounds Meet; obtained a 33rd at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Wolcott Farms; wound up 36th at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Cros-Lex High School; notched a 37th at the Marine City Invitational; garnered 38ths at a Goodells County Park-based Division 3 regional and a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Goodells County Park; secured a 45th at the Algonac Invitational; collected a 46th at the Caro-based Thumb Area Championships; crossed the finish-line 71st at the Harbor Beach Invitational; plus added a 205th at the Division 3 state finals that were contested at Brooklyn's Michigan International Speedway.

Honorable mention- James Strachan, Almont; Ryan Najor, Capac; Joe Cutino, Capac; Noah Freel, Imlay City; and Austen Cuthbertson, Imlay City.

Coach of the Year- Rick Filar, who directed Almont to firsts at the Brown City Invitational, Almont High School-based Foxes and Hounds Meet and a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meet hosted by Goodells County Park; seconds at Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Meets hosted by Cros-Lex and Wolcott Farms, the Capac Invitational and the Caro-based Thumb Area Championships; thirds at the Algonac Invitational and at a Division 3 regional hosted by Goodells County Park; an eighth at the Marlette Invitational; and a 19th at the Division 3 state finals at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, garners Tri-City Times All-Area Coach of the Year accolades.
