Times All-Area golf team laden with skill


Capac leads team with three selections

TRI-CITY AREA — From the opening tee shot in April until the final putt in May, these competitors had the skills needed to go low on a regular basis.

Here is a look at who made the 2010 edition of The Tri-City Times All-Area golf team and the numbers they posted along the way.

Colton Randall, Capac

Randall averaged 39.8 per nine-hole round during the 2010 campaign.

That included a season-low 34, matching Brian Murray's school record set during the 1996 campaign, as Capac (154) outshot North Branch (162) and Brown City (167) at Holly Meadows Golf Course on Tuesday, May 25.

As far as 18-hole tournaments are concerned, Randall carded a medalist round of 72 at a Division 3 district hosted by Holly Meadows Golf Course; claimed medalist honors with a 74 at the Blue Water Area Conference Tournament contested at Belle River Golf Course in Memphis; ranked fourth at the Brown City Invitational hosted by Holly Meadows Golf Course; plus chipped in a 91 during a Division 3 regional contested at The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth.

Postseason honors: Randall completed his fourth season on Capac's squad as an All-Blue Water Area Conference first team selection.

In addition to that honor, Randall was named the Blue Water Area Conference's Most Valuable Player.

Brett McDonald, Almont

McDonald, a senior averaged 42.0 per nine-hole round during the 2010 campaign.

That included a season-low 36 output Wednesday, May 12 at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Tournament hosted by Melvin's Willow Tree Golf Course.

As far as 18-hole tournaments are concerned, McDonald posted an 83 during a Division 3 district contested at Holly Meadows Golf Course in Capac; supplied an 84 at the Brown City Invitational hosted by Holly Meadows Golf Course; generated an 86 during a Division 3 regional contested at The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth; plus added an 89 at the Blue Water Area Conference Tournament hosted by Belle River Golf Course in Memphis.

Postseason honors: McDonald finished the season as an All-Blue Water Area Conference honorable mention selection.

Josh Messner, Capac

Messner, a senior, furnished a 42.6 average per nine-hole round during the 2010 campaign.

That included a season-low 37 output as Capac (154) outshot North Branch (162) and Brown City (167) at Holly Meadows Golf Course on Tuesday, May 25.

As far as 18-hole tournaments were concerned, Messner ranked fifth with an 80 at the Brown City hosted by Holly Meadows Golf Course; posted an 82 during a Division 3 regional contested at The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth; generated an 83 during a Division 2 district at Holly Meadows Golf Course; plus chipped in an 88 during the Blue Water Area Conference Tournament at Belle River Golf Course in Memphis.

Brett Gors, Almont

Gors, a junior, averaged 43.0 per nine hole round during the 2010 campaign.

He posted season-lows of 41 on two occasions.

The first time it happened was Monday, April 26 during a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree hosted by Timberwood Golf Course.

The second time it occurred was Wednesday, May 12 in a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree contested at Melvin's Willow Tree Golf Course.

As far as 18-hole tournaments were concerned, Gors shot an 80 at a Division 3 district hosted by Holly Meadows Golf Course in Capac; notched an 81 at the Brown City Invitational contested at Holly Meadows Golf Course in Capac; fired an 87 during a Division 3 regional hosted by The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth; plus added a 93 at the Blue Water Area Conference Tournament contested at Belle River Golf Course in Memphis.

Shane Lesniak, Imlay City

Lesniak, a junior, averaged 43.6 per nine-hole round during the 2010 campaign.

That included a season-low 39 output at a Blue Water Area Conferenc Jamboree Tournament hosted by Almont on Monday, April 14.

As far as 18 hole tournaments were concerned, Lesniak posted an 83 at the Holly Meadows Golf Course-based Brown City Invitational; carded an 87 at a Division 3 district hosted by Holly Meadows Golf Course; and added a 90 at the Blue Water Area Conference Tournament hosted by Belle River Golf Course in Memphis.

Mike Vollen, Capac

Vollen, a junior, averaged 44.6 per nine hole-round during the 2010 campaign.

That included a season-low 38 output at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Tournament hosted by Romeo Golf Course on Wednesday, May 10.

As far as 18-hole tournaments were concerned, Vollen carded a 91 at the Brown City Invitational; and fired a 97 during a Division 3 district contested at Holly Meadows Golf Course.

Drew Schultz,

Imlay City

Schultz, a senior, averaged 44.9 per nine-hole round during the 2010 campaign.

That included a season-low 43 output Tuesday, May 18 at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Tournament hosted by Lakeview Hills Golf Course.

As far as 18-hole tournaments were concerned, Schultz fired an 82 at the Blue Water Area Conference Tournament hosted Belle River Golf Course in Memphis; posted an 86 during a Division 3 district contested at Holly Meadows Golf Course in Capac; plus chipped in 89s at the Brown City Invitational hosted by Holly Meadows Golf Course and at a Division 3 regional contested at The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth.

Postseason honors: Schultz wrapped up his fourth season on Imlay City's varsity as an All-Blue Water Area Conference honorable mention choice.

Jordan Heiden, Capac

Heiden, a senior, averaged 46.3 per nine-hole round during the 2010 campaign.

That included a season-low 39 output during a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Tournament contested at Melvin's Willow Tree Golf Course on Wednesday, May 12.

As far as 18-hole tournaments were concerned, Heiden shot an 81 at the Brown City Invitational hosted by Holly Meadows Golf Course; managed an 82 at a Division 3 district contested at Holly Meadows Golf Course; fired an 85 at the Blue Water Area Conference Tournament hosted by Belle River Golf Course in Memphis; plus added a 96 at a Division 3 regional contested at The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth.

Second team- Josh Nemecek, Capac; Jeff McConnell, Capac; Alex Montney, Capac; Brenan Hopkins, Imlay City; Evan Dulac; Dryden; Andrew Quni, Dryden; Jason McKelvie, Almont; and Adam Bacheller, Almont.

Coach of the Year- This spring Capac, under the direction of Chris Huss, took first at Blue Water Area Conference Jamborees hosted by Imlay City and Capac; captured seconds at the Brown City Invitational and Blue Water Area Conference as well as Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Tournaments hosted by Richmond and Yale; registered thirds at a Blue Water Area Conference Jamboree Tournaments hosted by Almont and Armada; pulled up third at a Division 3 district it hosted; plus chipped in a 10th at a Division 3 regional hosted by The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth.

For his efforts, Huss earns Tri-City Times All-Area Coach of the Year honors.
