Askins, Heim and Pawlaczyk team up for West team in All-Star contest

TRI-CITY AREA — Almont's Taylor Askins and Nikki Heim joined forces with Imlay City's Anne Pawlaczyk to help the West squad squeak past the East team that included Capac's Ashley Mousseau, 68-65, in the 2010 edition of the Blue Water Girls' Senior All-Star Basketball Game last Friday.

Peck High School hosted the event which had fans of both sides on the edge of their respective bleacher seats from start to finish.

In Friday's matchup, the West side bolted out to a 10-0 advantage with 4:16 elapsed.

It looked as if the West squad was poised to pull even further away, but the East team refused to let that happen.

Instead, the East bounced back with a 31-16 run over then next 15 minutes-plus.

That left the East holding a 31-26 cushion at the halftime break.

When the action resumed, the West started to mount a comeback bid.

Aided by a 16-11 run encompassing a 7:36 span, the West knotted the scoreboard count at 42 points per side with 12:24 to play.

The West team followed it up with a 26-23 run over the last 12 minutes-plus.

That enabled the West team to pull out a 68- 65 victory when the final second ticked off the clock.

Yale's Janae Trombley and Jillian Verbeke led the West team with 13 points apiece. They also received points courtesy of Brown City's Kristen Greene (10), Almont's Nikki Heim (six), Almont's Taylor Askins, Imlay City's Anne Pawlaczyk, Brown City's Sarah Murray, Peck's Nicole Pries, Yale's Bailee Boyd and Emily Vinckier (four each) plus Richmond's Ashlee Chayka (two).

The West team was coached by Brown City's Cindy Burton.

Bri Woycechowski, of Harbor Beach, paced the East squad with 10 points. She was backed by Marysville's -Jenae Curley (nine points), Sandusky's Kelsey Jensen (eight), Sandusky's Jenna Stauffer and Cardinal Mooney's Allie Theut (seven each), Cardinal Mooney's Jenny DeBlouw and Marysville's Stacie Miller (six apiece), Marysville's Blaire Hondzinski (four), Capac's Ashley Mousseau and Deckerville's Carleah Kramer (three each) and Deckerville's Shelby McVittie (two).

Cardinal Mooney's Maggie Doss, Deckerville's Tiffany Smith and also appeared on the East's roster.

The East team was coached by Deckerville's Pat Oswald.
