Fox, Streber reach quarters as Almont tennis team nabs 15th

ALMONT — The Almont girls' tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of two flights en route to a 15th-place finish last Friday and Saturday at the Division 4 state finals.

Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University is where the matches were contested.

Michelle Fox (second singles) and Brooke Streber (third singles) headlined for Almont that day, netting a quarterfinal round appearance each.

Fox started things off with a bye.

She then made sure that her tournament run would continue, registering a 6-4, 6-1 triumph against Ann Arbor Greenhills foe Laura Hogikyan.

That outcome landed her a quarterfinal round assignment against Kalamazoo Hackett's Meika Ashby, the number one seed. Their match wound down with Ashby, the eventual state champion, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Streber, the sixth seed in her flight, opened with a bye as well.

That was followed by a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Paw Paw's Kendra Cook.

She then bowed out with a 2-6, 0-6 quarterfinal round setback to Grand Rapids South Christian's Jackie DeBoer, the eventual state runnerup.

Sierra Grant (fourth singles), Jaime Ligon and Jessica Dayton (first doubles) plus Olivia Papineau and Miranda Offner (third doubles) had the next best Almont showings, reaching the second round of their respective flights.

Grant began play with a bye.

She then watched her tournament run draw to a close with a 3-6, 5-7 second round loss to Frankenmuth's Olivia Samson.

Ligon and Dayton started things off with a bye.

The Almont combination then bowed out with a 1-6, 1-6 setback to the fifth-seeded Grosse Point Woods University Liggett team of Emily Broder and Madeline Mair.

Papineau and Offner opened with a bye.

The Almont combination then watched their tournament run draw to a close with a 3-6, 6-4, 3-6 loss to Traverse City Christian's Karley Bullard and Christy Benson.

Bobbi Enos (first singles), Jill Zygmontowicz and Katie Dobbs (second doubles) plus Maddie Burns and Krissy Fulton (fourth doubles) all ran into tough draws for Almont, going 0-1.

Enos bowed out with a 3-6, 4-6 setback to Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett's Paige Counsman; Zygmontowicz and Dobbs exited play with a 3-6, 5-7 loss to Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard's Natalie Ring and Claire Nulty; plus Burns and Fulton bowed out with a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6 setback to the second-seeded Ann Arbor Greenhills team of Miriam Akervall and Rae Schueller, the eventual champions.
