ALMONT — Almont defeated visiting Marlette, 9-0 and 8-3, in a non-conference varsity baseball doubleheader last Friday.
In the opener, Corey Downing (three singles), Derek Wiggins (two doubles) plus Joe Rottman and Tyler Wiggins (two singles each) proved Almont's top offensive weapons. They were given assistance in the hitting department by Michael Boughner (a single).
Tyler Wiggins got the win for Almont. He worked five innings, allowed five hits and struck out six.
In the nightcap, Almont collected nine basehits on their way to a win.
Kevin Creger (two singles and a double) put up Almont's best offensive numbers there. Pat Russell followed, legging out a double. The Raiders also received basehits courtesy of Pat Finn, Tyler Wiggins, Downing, Rottman and Shelton.
Rottman was Almont's pitcher of record. He worked five innings, gave up five hits and registered one strikeout victim along the way.
Three days prior to that, Almont dropped a 14-13 outcome to visiting Blue Water Area Conference rival Algonac.
In the slugfest, Almont finished with 13 basehits.
Shelton headlined for Almont that day, collecting three basehits. Tyler Wiggins, Mike Grundner and Erik O'Connor (two hits each) along with Dennis Harrow, Dan Lackowski, Downing and Finn (one hit apiece).
With the outcomes, Almont now stands at 9-2 overall and 3-1 as far as BWAC encounters are concerned.
