Almont, Imlay City girls dominate 2009 -10 squad

TRI-CITY AREA — From the opening game to the last, the 2009-10 was one featuring plenty of exciting clashes.

Here is a look at the players who separated themselves from the other during that span and the numbers they generated en route to Tri-City Times All-Area first team accolades:

Nikki Heim, Almont.

Heim (who wound up with 971 career points) netted 310 points in 24 contests, an average of 12.9 points per game, this winter.

That placed her first on the Almont ballclub and among those who secured a spot on The Tri-City Times All-Area first team lineup.

She also contributed 60 assists, 48 steals, 25 rebounds and 14 blocked shots to Almont's cause.

Heim, a 5-7 senior guard, wrapped up her fourth season on Almont's varsity as an All-Blue Water Area Conference first team choice.

Anne Pawlaczyk, Imlay City.

Pawlaczyk amassed 220 points over 21 games, an average of 10.5 points per contest, during the 2009-10 campaign.

That ranked her first on the Imlay City squad and second among Tri-City Times All-Area first team honorees.

She also collected 68 assists and 52 steals.

Pawlaczyk, a 5-5 senior guard, ended her third season on Imlay City's varsity as an All-Blue Water Area Conference first team selection.

Tasha Evans, Almont.

Evans supplied 241 points in 24 contests, an average of 10.0 points per game, this winter.

That placed her second on the Almont ballclub and third among those who secured a spot on The Tri-City Times All-Area first team lineup.

She also contributed 203 rebounds, 31 steals, 14 blocked shots and 13 assists to Almont's cause.

Evans, a 5-10 junior forward, finished her second full season on Almont's varsity as an All-Blue Water Area Conference first team pick.

Jennica Polzin, Capac.

Polzin accumulated 184 points over 21 games, an average of 8.8 points per contest, during the 2009-10 campaign.

That ranked her first on the Capac squad and fourth among Tri-City Times All-Area first team honorees.

She also made 58 steals, grabbed 50 rebounds and handed off 31 assists.

Polzin, a 5-5 junior guard, finished her third season on Capac's varsity as an All-Blue Water Area Conference first team choice.

Millie Velez, Imlay City.

Velez collected 179 points in 21 contests, an average of 8.5 points per game, this winter.

That placed her second on the Imlay City ballclub and fifth among those who secured a spot on The Tri-City Times All-Area first team lineup.

She also grabbed 134 rebounds.

Velez, a 6-0 senior center, concluded her second season on Imlay City's varsity as an All-Blue Water Area Conference first team selection.

Maddy Couch, Dryden.

Couch tossed in 162 points over 20 games, an average of 8.1 points per contest, during the 2009-10 campaign.

That ranked her sixth among Tri-City Times All-Area first team honorees.

The 5-6 junior guard also averaged 3.9 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per contest in her second varsity season.

Taylor Askins, Almont.

Askins netted 95 points in 14 contests, an average of 6.8 points per game, this winter.

That placed her third on the Almont ballclub and sixth among those who secured a spot on The Tri-City Times All-Area first team lineup.

She also contributed 35 assists, 32 rebounds, 28 steals and eight blocked shots to Almont's cause.

Askins, a 5-6 senior guard who transferred to Almont from Dakota High School, completed her first and final season on her squad as an All-Blue Water Area Conference honorable mention choice.

Taelor Webb, Imlay City.

Webb generated 129 points over 21 games, an average of 6.5 points per contest, during the 2009-10 campaign.

That ranked her third on the Imlay City squad and seventh among Tri-City Times All-Area first team honorees.

She also registered 37 steals.

Webb, a 5-7 senior forward, ended her second season on Imlay City's varsity as an All-Blue Water Area Conference honorable mention pick.

Second team- Ashley Mousseau, Capac; Angie Kopas, Dryden; Lindsay Ladzinski, Almont; Jaclyn Van Dyk, Imlay City; Chelsea Botwin, Capac; and Amanda Wood, Dryden.

Honorable mention- Nichole Parks, Capac; Gianna Sabatino, Capac; and Nicole Gibson, Almont.

Coach of the Year- For directing Almont to a 17-7 overall mark, including a pacesetting 13-1 BWAC showing and a top Class B district finish, Steve Edwards has been named the recipient of Tri-City Times All-Area Coach of the Year honors.
