Wrestlers set to test skills


Palace of Auburn Hills to host state's top grapplers

TRI-CITY AREA — When the Division 3 individual state wrestling finals take place this Thursday through Saturday at The Palace of Auburn Hills, there will be seven grapplers hailing from Tri-City schools competing.

In the 135-pound weight class, Imlay City sophomore Sam Lyscas (56-3) opens his tournament stint against Williamston junior Paul Sawaya (46-8).

The winner of that encounter squares off versus the survivor of a clash between Newaygo senior Austin Dingledine (49-4) and Delton Kellogg junior Jeff Bissett (42-7).

At 145 pounds, Capac senior Brian Kulman begins his pursuit of All-State accolades (given to the top-eight finishers in each weight class) against Coloma senior John Tanner. Those grapplers head into battle with 54-8 and 48-2 marks, respectively.

The victor of that battle tangles with the survivor of a match between Dundee senior Brandon Desbaugh (38-8) and Reed City junior Brian Mitchell (26-8).

At 160 pounds, Imlay City senior Matt Myers starts his tournament run against Roscommon senior Eric Meyer. Those grapplers head into battle with 50-2 and 50-9 marks, respectively.

The victor of that encounters tangles with the survivor of a match between Wyoming Kelloggsville senior Chris Brown (33-0) and Durand senior Chris Wellman (45-16).

In the 171-pound weight class, Capac senior Ed Niemi (41-12) opens his tournament stint against Otsego senior Trevor Davis (54-5).

The winner of that encounter squares off versus the survivor of a clash between Durand senior Logan Dean (47-12) and Clare senior Zach Simon (35-7).

At 189 pounds, Capac senior Thomas Bolday begins his pursuit of All-State accolades against Napoleon junior Jacob Olsen. Those grapplers head into battle with 56-5 and 24-14 marks, respectively.

The victor of that battle tangles with the survivor of a match between South Haven senior Allen Antonson (43-8) and Benzie Central senior Daren Crawford (31-4).

In the 189-pound weight class, Almont junior Derek Kopp (22-13) opens his tournament stint against Dundee junior Justin Heiserman (55-2).

The winner of that encounter squares off versus the survivor of a clash between Shelby senior Richard Rodriguez (45-11) and Wyoming Godwin Heights senior Darwin Mathis (33-11).

At heavyweight, Pat White begins his pursuit of All-State accolades against Lake Odessa Lakewood senior Ryan Steverson. Those grapplers head into battle with 49-0 and 30-8 marks, respectively.

The victor of that battle tangles with the survivor of a match between Jackson Lumen Christi senior Caleb Alger (36-13) and Gladstone senior Jacob Hadel (34-13).
